Plants get many of their most basic needs from soil, sun and water, however, if you’re producing crops for distribution, or any for-profit venture, those basic needs are probably not enough. A quality fertilizer is necessary for any agricultural, horticultural, commercial greenhouse or hydroponic operation. Consistent fertilizer use can yield great results on any kind of crop, but they can pose a major problem for pets or other animals which are allowed physical access to said plants and fertilizer. Animals, particularly pets have been known to become ill when exposed to fertilizer in certain situations, so it’s important for anyone who cares for both animals and pets to know all the safety precautions. You don’t want to have your family dog end up at the vet as a result of exposure to harmful chemicals found in fertilizers. 

What are the real dangers?

The fact is that fertilizers can be dangerous for pets, but they are by no means animal poison. Fertilizers including pesticides are the most dangerous when exposed to animals. Fortunately, none of Rainsoil’s products contain any pesticides. Animals can come to harm when fertilizer has been freshly laid, however, the main issue you want to avoid is when animals get into the fertilizer container and consume a large amount of it. This kind of extreme exposure can lead to vomiting or diarrhea. Only in extremely rare cases would an animal be in any sort of mortal danger. Simply, by following a few of the following safety tips and keeping an eye on your animals, you should be in the clear.

What kind of precautions should be taken?

Firstly, you should always read the directions when using fertilizer. Let the fertilizer set into the plants before allowing any animals to roam in the area. Typically a liquid product will be much quicker than pellets. Secondly, make sure to clean up and store your fertilizer in a safe place immediately after use. Some animals can be strongly attracted to the smell of certain fertilizers, so simply hiding it from sight may not be enough. A locked room or a barn may be the best place. If your animals do experience symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea they should clear up in a day or two. If they do not, call your vet or nearest emergency animal hospital. Pet-friendly fertilizer is available, but it is simply a product that absorbs in plants more quickly, so it can be just as dangerous if an animal eats it out of the container.

All in all it shouldn’t cause you too much headache to prevent any incidents with your animals. Rainsoil’s products are pesticide free, but pets and other animals can still have other minor issues from extreme exposure. Simply follow the above guidelines and you should have peace of mind that your animals are safe.
