Retain Your Rain

January 2020 | Raegan Garlitz

According to the United Nations Global Human Development Report, water scarcity affects every continent. Approximately 3.5 billion people in the world are experiencing water shortage or scarcity. It is a global problem. At the more local level, farmers, municipalities landscapers, gardeners and homeowners are all seeing this scarcity in the price of water.

Water scarcity is a severe problem in the area of the world that RainSoil calls home, Southern Nevada. Here in the Mojave Desert, very little grows green. In an average year, Las Vegas receives a measly 4 inches of rain, which is certainly not enough to keep most plants green and happy. Just simply growing grass for a lawn proves to be an expensive, if not impossible proposition.

Enter RainSoil.

RainSoil’s ability to absorb up to 9 times its weight in water can work miracles for professional farmers, landscapers, municipality managers and even amateur gardeners and homeowners. A typical example would be a homeowner in the Mojave Desert, who had tried several times to grow grass from sod in his backyard. After a third failure, and thousands of dollars spent on sod and water in an attempt to develop a lawn, he knew there had to be a better way.

wateringLawnAfter learning about RainSoil, he spread about ¾” over his lawn, and mixed in grass seed and a few basic amendments. He began to water.

Within three days, he noticed seeds beginning to germinate and grass beginning to grow. Within two weeks, he mowed his lawn for the first time! Later on, he compared notes and found that he was spending significantly less money on water than his neighbors, yet had a healthier, greener lawn.

If he was able to grow a thick, green lawn from seed, in the middle of the Mojave Desert, think of the water savings that can be realized in other parts of the world, with all kinds of vegetation using RainSoil! Although it might not make the problem of water scarcity a thing of the past, RainSoil is a step in the right direction!
